Vintage Wedding Rings - Post 31

22/05/2026 | Brenda Ginsberg

Vintage Wedding rings are a very special category of jewelry. Not to be confused with the gorgeous pieces you will wear as
a bride or groom at your wedding, this jewelry is what you will wear on a daily basis, hopefully, for the rest of your life.
It's the little band that tells the world you are taken, committed, obligated, a part of upright society.

On the one hand, you want something that reflects the serious nature of your commitment; something that is practical
through good times and bad, and yet, there is no reason to go for dowdy and unimaginative. Vintage wedding rings are a
great wicket: comparing vintage to modern wedding rings, here are a few reasons to go for vintage: superior design,
aesthetically more pleasing, better made, more sturdy and usually, relatively a lot more affordable. Then there's the magic
and mystery of a ring passed down through generations of loving people, hopefully, your own ancestors.

What metal and gems to choose: Traditionally, wedding rings are gold. I've heard of people using wood and even leaves to
indicate their commitment to the environment as well as their love for each other.
A very 'emo' lady and her highly tattooed husband bought a black
memorial band from me. It was the only item of jewelry that they were prepared to tolerate. On the more
practical and traditional level, consider platinum - it can be beautifully worked and while seemingly delicate and fine,
is very strong and secure. Do you want neutral tones of diamonds and platinum to ensure that your ring is suitable
for every occasion and every outfit? You might want to make a bold statement with a bright color.
Great design will never go out of fashion regardless of the material, but do remember, this ring is going to be worn 24/7.

The most satisfying scenario is to share rings that your own ancestors wore, but failing that, it's possible to find
beautiful vintage wedding rings from a variety of eras.

Vintage Victorian wedding rings are sometimes enameled, which makes them susceptible to damage.  Mourning rings - a
little depressing for a marriage? To me, the most suitable vintage wedding rings were made in the Deco - Retro period -
around the 1920-1940's. The are wide gold bands, often patterned in more than one tone of gold, often set with tiny
diamonds and rubies or sapphires, often with great energetic designs.

As we move back in time, vintage wedding rings might be finer, which is not always suitable for rough everyday wear.
This might be the reason that so many vintage wedding rings were made in 9ct gold, which is a lot hardier than it's finer
counterparts. I see lots of ladies wearing their wedding, and even engagement rings to the gym, so presumably, provided
you check prongs regularly, you are quite safe.

You might choose a wedding ring with a particular symbol that is meaningful to you.  For example, dogs are symbols of loyalty. You are not obliged to stick to the trends created centuries ago. Choose what matters to you.

Choose a fun and interesting vintage wedding ring and if you already have one, choose another for next time you renew your
vows. Stacking vintage wedding rings is elegant and intriguing.
