Antique Georgian dangle earrings gold amethyst chrysoberyl cannetille (7274)

Antique Georgian dangle drop earrings ear pendants. Gold, amethysts, chrysoberyl. Made in England, United Kingdom circa 1820's.

Measurements: Weight is 5.2 grams. 1 1/4 inches (35mm) long, not including the wires.

Description : Classic, elegant, fine, dangle drop earrings. Surmounts are oval collet-set chrysoberyl with gold globulation on either side. A fine line of tiny loops connects to the drop.
This allows independent movement to the drop, which will swing and sway, adding to visual interest.
The drop is a pointed oval shape. The upper point is set with a tiny pale yellow chrysoberyl. The main body of the drop is an elongated pear-shaped amethyst of a lovely deep purple color, collet-set in gold and surrounded by fine coiling pyramids of cannetille with gold globulation highlighting various points. The bottom end is set with a round pale yellow chrysoberyl and further fine gold globular details.
Wonderful contrast between the purple, bright gold and light yellow, which are complementary colors and therefore show one another off to great advantage. According to John Benjamin (page 22 of his book on Antique Jewellery), chrysoberyl, also known then as chrysolite, was very popular during the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Gems are open at the back.
Cannetille of this quality was only made from 1820 - 1830, so we can be very sure of the time-frame.

The wires are almost certainly replacements. They are easy to insert and comfortable to wear.

Marks and Metal: No marks, as is to be expected. Acid tested gold stayed for 18k.
