Antique Georgian Earrings Ear Pendants Gold Silver Diamonds Iberian 18C (7273)

Antique Georgian earrings ear pendants. Gold, silver, diamonds. Made in the Iberian peninsula - Portugal or Spain, 18th century.

Measurements: Weight is 5.3 grams. Not including wires, earrings are 1 1/2 inches (4cm) long.

Description : A pair of fine gold chains forks out to suspend a top in the form of a bow, which was the classic surmount for Iberian jewelry of the period. Composed of wonderfully fine gold lacy openwork, supporting silver adornment set with tiny diamonds. Silver in flower and foliate forms. Minute detail, all hand made and very sturdy. Simple, broad silver loops suspend the pear-shaped drops. These are composed of a similar scrolling gold lacy ground with the same silver foliage and flowers, set with diamonds. In addition, each drop has a large pyramid of gold set with a larger diamond. Diamonds are very simply cut, reflecting the limited technology of the time.
Wires are clearly later replacements, but are easy to insert and comfortable to wear.
While much Iberian jewelry of the period is very clunky and heavy, these earrings are fine and light, making them ideal to be comfortably worn today.
The chains and loops allow each section to swing and sway as the wearer moves, adding to visual interest. Beautifully made and vastly versatile - they are as wearable today as they were about 250 years ago.

Marks and Metal: An indented mark on the right top of the large drop. We are not familiar with that mark, but it is stamped in the identical place on both earrings. Gold was electronically and acid tested. Like much old gold, it is not consistent - measuring between 18 and 14ct.
