I don't know whether it's coincidental, but the most beautiful Mexican Fire Opal jewelry I have seen was made in the Edwardian era. Perhaps those final members of a dying breed and world, of the Belle Epoque era, were exquisitely tuned in to the truly luxurious.

Another warm, comfort color is the red of garnets, their deep glow reminiscent of embers in a winter’s fire.  While garnet jewelry prevails from the times of antiquity, I find the garnet necklaces of the Georgian period have a specially warm hue. Is it because they are not diluted with the cooling effects of pearls or other stones? Often a Georgian garnet riviere is set with garnets and garnets alone.
