Antique Jewelry for Fathers Day (2) - post 166

Our society seems to have mixed feelings about Father's Day.
Do we take Father's Day seriously? Is Father's Day a sort of p.c. obligation? Is Father's Day just a token gesture because if Mother's can have their day, then surely, fathers should by rights, have theirs too.

We are constantly told about the significance of the role fathers play in bringing up their children. Not only do we see many single Dads/Dads without Moms doing a great and challenging job, but we know that role reversal has become much more common in society at large. Even when the parents are a Mom and Dad, it might just be Dad who is the nurterer. A Dad might not be a biological Dad, but a father-figure who does just as important a job. Maybe a special word of thanks to these special people.

Men are supposed to be big and tough, without emotions and needs of their own. Really?
This is not the forum to discuss it, but many, many people know for sure that men are the tender gender. To a large extent, civilised society has learned that there need be no discrepancy between being a strong man and a good Daddy. Let's leave it at that.

In my book, anyone who does a good job, anyone who is a caring parent is a person who sacrifices. Parents of either gender sacrifice a great deal of their time, emotions, energy and resources of every type in order to do good with their offspring. Ok, not every man is hands on, but there are a lot of dads out there who are and they need to be recognised, encouraged and thanked. Father's Day is an opportunity to recognise these special men in our lives.

We live in an incredibly materialistic society. On the other hand thanks, caring, devotion and love are expressed in material gifts. And let's face it, everybody likes to get a gift. Showing that you took time and trouble is meaningful beyond the monetary value of what you bought. Why the contradiction? Because one concept is consumerism pure and simple and the other is sentiment, caring and love. So, the trick is to work out what will be a meaningful gift for Dad. The gift we give is a concrete expression of our appreciation on Father's Day.

Of course we know that every person is different. But, I've noticed that a lot of men like to feel the sophisticated luxury of owning something especially classy. Maybe it's part of the image of who they aspire to be - James Bond or King Blonk. The explanation is probably tucked away deep in their psyche. I know for sure that men are actually bigger spenders than women. They like their fancy cars, watches, pens, and other toys that cost a great deal more than most of womens' frivolities.

With affordable true luxury in mind, let's look at a few original antique jewelry options.
The obvious one today would be cufflinks or a man's dress set. There are enough great cufflinks out there to suit every taste and every pocket. Cufflinks are often tiny works of art that a man can wear and express just who he is.

For a long time, we forgot all about brooches, but they have come back, especially for men.  Men have taken to wearing brooches of every sort. They seem especially to like brooches that have a message or a story. An animal or a certain stone or design.
Flags, dogs, horses, flowers.  Brooches that hint at his profession or love of sport.  There are huge choices out there.  Yes, it takes some thought to work out what is suitable for your Father and his taste.
Your bloke might not be ready for a large statement on his shoulder or lapel, but a tie pin could be a good start.

Pendants and chains are another perennial favorite and what you choose should depend entirely on your Dad's taste. Is he conservative, religious, daring? Will it be a simple cross or something much wilder?

Rings are another great choice for most Dads. Rings also come in every form and tell every message. From amuletic rings that protect the wearer to flashy diamonds and gems, one might be religious and one hint at sportsmanship.

Whether you buy Dad something really expensive or simple-sweet, make sure that you have given your Dad some thought. Your gift should show that you took time to consider his personality, likes and dislikes, possibly to guess at his dreams.  Make the 3rd Sunday of June a day when you show Dad how much you care too.
