Antique Belle Epoque Art Deco Necklace Pendant. Platinum, diamonds, citrine. Made by Liberty & Co. circa 1915, United Kingdom. Comes in Original fitted box. Independent appraisal.

Measurements: Weight is 3.9 grams. Total length is 17inches (43cm). Length of pendant section is 1 7/8 inches (5cm).

Description : Fine, platinum chain with a central long gold drop pendant in a number of sections. The largest citrine is cushion shaped - a rectangle with cut corners, voluptious and rich. It is a very deep orange that glows and gleams as the light catches it and is sure to draw every eye. This large gem is attached at the bottom of an elongated, sweeping triangle with curved sides, as delicate as the citrine is strong. It is composed of fine filigree platinum enclosing a lacy openwork setting of diamonds with clever use of the negative spaces. This section is actually made in parts, with an invisible join in the middle. This gives it flexibility and shows the luxurious quality of the workmanship. The diamond-set apex of the triangle is also incredibly made so that it can move seperately to the rest of the triangle below and the surmount above. The surmount is a smaller round citrine, of the same color and tone as that below.

The exceptionally fine workmanship is part of what made Liberty & Co so famous and sought after. The use of color and contrasts is wonderful. Subtle design very cleverly incorporating the size and strength of the citrines with the almost ephemeral workmanship and color of the diamonds and metalwork. Fabulous looking and highly wearable. This versatile necklace can be worn at any time for any function.

Strictly speaking, this necklace was made during the Belle Epoque period, early 20th century and it certainly displays the exceptionally fine workmanship for which the era is known. The strong design and geometric forms are characteristic of the Art Deco aesthetic which it predates by a decade. Liberty & Co was recognised as an innovator and for the exceptional design and workmanship of their products and both are very true of this necklace.
