Antique Victorian, Louis Wiese dress buttons. 18k gold. Made in Paris, France, 19th century, by Louis, the son of Jules Wiese, both of whom were amongst the most renowned jewellers of the day. Unisex - suitable for a man or a woman.

Measurements: Weight is 6.3 grams. Diameter approximately 1/2 inch (1.2cm).

Description : A pair of small buttons in high karat, bright yellow gold, beautifully modelled with masks of fawns or other pan-like gods from ancient Greek / Roman mythology. The open mouth, curved, aquiline nose and head entirely surrounded by foliage. Quality of the sculpture is superb.
The masks are enclosed in openwork round gold borders.
Both Jules and Louis Wiese were rightly considered amongst the best jewellers of the day, specialising in Revival themes such as Gothic, Renaissance and Classic Greek and Roman. They were the actual jewelry manufacturers for other top French jewellery names such as Froment-Meurice until they opened their own jewelry business in their own Wiese name.
These buttons would show off on a shirt collar to fantastic effect. They could be used as cufflinks and possibly threaded onto a thin gold chain and worn as pendants. A fabulous example of the wonderful work of Wiese.
Can be worn and enjoyed by a man or a woman.

Marks and Metal: French eagle head mark for 18k gold; Impressed WIESE; Louis Wiese's Maker's mark lozenge, a rhombus with embossed WIESE, star above and star below the name.

Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
