Antique Victorian Etruscan Revival earrings / ear pendants. Gold (see below). Made in the United Kingdom, circa 1880.
Measurements: Weight is 12.4 grams. Length is slightly under 2inches (5cm).
Description : Stunning example of Etruscan Revival jewelry at its best. Dangling ear pendants made entirely of gold, with a geometric design and superb workmanship providing much of the attraction.
Simple gold wires lead to a round, half dome surmount. The surmount must be flat so that it sits comfortably on the wearer's ears. A slightly arching wheel of gold with an open center containing a knot formed by a gold tube with gold ribbon arching over it. Minutely detailed gold beadwork, filigree and granulation make a textured and varied surface.
A pair of tiny gold chains meet and link half-way down towards the globe drops. The chains cause the globes to swing and sway as the wearer moves, causing constant motion, adding to the visual interest.
The globe drops are magnificently adorned with tiny Etruscan workmanship, like the surmounts above - forming lacy patterns around a broad band of the circumference. The bottom terminals have applied globulated beadwork forming a complex star-shape
with a larger golden globule comprising the ultimate terminal.
Marks and Metal: As is to be expected, there are no marks on earrings from this period. We tested the gold with wildly varying results - ranging from 14-24 carats. We will err on the side of caution and guarantee 14k.
During this period, gold was not produced by computerised machines. Instead, the hand made technology resulted in varying results of the gold purity in a single item.
Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
