Antique Victorian Earrings articulated ear pendants Gold Garnets English (7221)
Antique Victorian earrings / ear pendants. 18k and 14k Gold and cabochon garnets. Made in Great Britain circa 1870's.
Measurements: Weight is 8.8 grams. 1 1/8 inches (3cm) long.
Description : Classic, elegant earrings / ear pendants consisting of a round surmount of ropetwist gold enclosing a gold-colette mounted cabochon red garnet. A strong hinge suspends a pear-shaped carbuncle in an identical gold mount. During the Georgian and Victorian eras, these deep red cabochon garnets were extremely popular and known as carbuncles. Flat, gold backs, probably used to enhance the depth of color. Simple gold wires are typically replacements - easy to insert and comfortable to wear. The hinges allow movement of the drops. Well made.
Extremely elegant and wearable. Wonderful glow to the garnets, which seem quite alive as the light catches them at different angles.
Marks and Metal: As is to be expected, there are no marks. We tested the metal electronically. The wires are 14k and the rest of the gold tests as 18k.
Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
