Description:
Charming Antique Animal-Themed Caddy Spoon – Horse, Dog & Possibly Sheep – Repousse Floral & Beaded Design. Delightfully unusual antique caddy spoon featuring an intricately detailed animal motif. The fluted, round bowl showcases a finely hammered repousse image of a graceful horse standing atop a grassy knoll. A decorative border of raised repousse beading encircles the scalloped edge, adding visual texture and depth.
The arched handle leads to a beautifully moulded basket overflowing with flowers. Above the basket, two animals are featured: the upper figure is clearly a dog, with a curled tail resting on his left side; the lower terminal figure may represent a sheep or another dog. This whimsical combination of animals adds charm and character to the piece.
A lovely and collectible item for lovers of antique silver, animal-themed design, or unique tea accessories.
Marks and metal:
This unusual silver caddy spoon bears multiple hallmarks.
On the back of the bowl, there is a worn mark (please see photos for detail).
Leading up the handle from the bowl are three Dutch hallmarks. The first is clearly struck and features a lion and key—a mark associated with Amsterdam silver from the 19th century.
The second hallmark appears to be a faded "S", and the third is illegible, likely due to natural wear from handling and polishing over time.
Additional marks are located in the center of the basket of flowers and on the dog finial at the terminal of the handle (also shown in photos).
The silver content is assumed to be .800, which was a standard purity for Dutch silver during that period.
Condition:
besides the light wear mentioned, the spoon is in very good condition considering it's age and use.
