Antique Georgian telescoping theatre opera spy glass or lorgnette. Made in France circa 1920. Gold, silver, gilded brass, mother of pearl, turquoise beads and rubies / gems - see below. Signed Signed Derepas Palais-Royal 23.   
 

Measurements:

Weight is 93.2 grams. 3 1/4 inches (8.5cm) long when extended. Approximately 1 3/8 inches (41mm) in diameter.  

Description :  

Made at a time when aristocrats spent their evening at the opera or theatre, seeing and being seen, this would be as much a prop to look good as to view others. 
Multiple folding draws that telescope allowing the viewer to observe items at closer range.  Gilded brass. The final 'drum' exquisitely decorated: Tiny beaded gilded borders, Inner borders of turquoise beads, believed to be made of opaline glass. They enclose a broad band of mother of pearl with parallel stations at right angles to the band-length. Each station consists of a central flower, composed of turquoise beads enclsing a red gem. On either end is a smaller red gem folled by a golden globule that extends to the inner golden border.
The red gems tested on our Presidium Duotester gem tester as rubies, but may be regarded as pink sapphires or other. 
Each gem - ruby and turquoise, is enclosed in a colette with crimped edge. Terminals of gemmy stations are golden globules.  


Marks and Metal:

Embossed Derepas Palais-Royal 23. Inner bands and golden globules were tested as 10k gold. Metal holding turquoise is silver. 
     

Condition:

Good with negligible wear commensurate with age.  Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
