Antique opal necklace. Made in France, Edwardian through Belle Epoque and Art Deco era - circa 1910-30. Opals, rock crystal, 18k white gold and diamonds.
Measurements: Weight is 14.7 grams. Approximately 16 3/4 inches (43cm) long. Central opal approximately 6.5mm; smallest opals approximately 3-4mm in diameter.
Description : A small but particularly lovely opal necklace.
The round opal beads display lovely iridescence - flashing blues and greens, yellows and purples, depending on how the light catches them. Each opal is seperated from its neighbours by a small rock crystal seperater bead - often used as such during that time. Opals are gradated in size, with the largest in the center and decreasing towards the back.
Clasp in white gold, with a lovely cabochon opal set in the center and a pair of rose cut diamonds on either side of it. The central cabochon opal with particularly nice flashing colors. A hooked tongue is easily inserted / removed. There is a very fine safety chain for additional security.
Marks and Metal: A French eagle head on the tongue of the clasp indicates 18k gold. There is a mark on the 'box' of the clasp that is not possible to read.
Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
Colors and "photos: I took the pictures outside in natural daylight, using different colored backgrounds to convey the variation in tones according to the light and background.
