Vintage Judaica carved olivewood lion. Made in Israel, circa 1950-1970's.
Measurements: 12 1/4 inches long.
Naturalistically carved Lion of Juda carved from olive wood, typical of craftmanship from early to mid 1900's. The lion's mouth is open with teeth finely depicted. He strides accross the rectangular base with rounded corners and ridged border. Lovely detail. Great strength of the animal shown in the carving. The underside of the base is hollow - almost like the container of a Mezuzah. The reason for this is unknown. It is very rare to find a piece of old carved olivewood of this size. Great subject. Well executed. Great historical interest.
Marks: the carving has an original old lable in Hebrew that attests to the purchase tax. These lables were discontinued before 1980.
Condition: A tiny chip to the left ear, negligible wear commensurate with age.
