Description :
'Dormeuse' are literally 'sleepers' - earrings that are so comfortable and versatile that one never needs to take them off or change them. These small French dormeuse are flower shaped - round with large wine-red garnets in the middle, surrounded by a ring of tiny diamonds. The garnets are so gently faceted that they almost appear to be cabochon. Like most antique jewelry, the diamonds are set in silver in order to show them off to better effect in candle or gas light. Wires/fittings go through the ear lobe from the back to the front, also typical of Victorian/Georgian jewelry.
Color of red is very striking especially as offset by the tiny diamonds.
Sturdy and versatile. Once you put them on, you need never take them off.
Diamonds are mostly too small to test, but those we tested with our Presidium gem-tester tested as diamonds.

THE STORY:
Dormeuse earrings—named for their comfortable “sleeping” fit—first appeared in the 18th century and became a practical alternative to heavier ear ornaments of the time. Their defining feature is a secure back-to-front clasp that sits close to the ear, making them both elegant and easy to wear. Dormeuse earrings were extremely popular in France, but it is rare to find them with this gem combination. While many French garnets of the period were foiled and close-backed, these are not. Their natural deep red glow creates a very rich and luxurious look.
