Antique Georgian Brooch 18C coral cameo mythological wine god animal gold (7302)
$7,500.00

Availability:
1 left in stock
Antique Georgian cameo brooch set in a later, Victorian mount. 18k gold, natural coral. Coral from Italy; gold mount of unknown origin (English or European).
Measurements: Weight is 20.8 grams. 1 5/8 inches (4cm) long.
Description : Carved coral bust in the form of Dionysus, Bacchus or a bachante - a mythological figure related to wine as can be seen by the grapes and vine leaves. Bacchus was also associated with various animals, in particular the leopard or panther. The animal worn as a cape by this figure has long bat-like ears and a wavy pelt that intertwines with the locks of the god. Beautiful detail to the grape theme in the hair and superbly carved hand and facial features. Animal is no less detailed and superbly depicted.
Quality of the carving is outstanding.
Coral of a beautiful orange color. Regular tone, glossy and creamy.
The coral was carved no later than the 18th century.
It is set in a later, Victorian gold mount with foliate incised decoration. The hinged pin with trombone catch. The gold mount is a perfect foil, showing off the cameo without competing for attention.
The fabulous quality of the carved coral make this a true collector's item or museum piece.
Marks and Metal: There is an unknown hallmark on the pin. Gold was electronically and acid tested as 18k.
Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Coral is beautiful with a few minute organic spots and a single large concave area at the back. These are not flaws, but original, as nature made them. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
Please note: overseas shipping might need CITES documentation, which is the responsibility of the buyer.
Default Title - $7,500.00 USD
