Antique Victorian diamond earrings 18k gold, silver ear pendants Appraisal (7398)

Antique Victorian ear pendant earrings. 18k yellow gold, silver (see below) and diamonds. Exact origin not known. Made circa 1880-1890.

Measurements: Weight is 7.4 grams. Length, not including the gold wires and loops is approximately 7/8 inch (2.25cm).
1.95ct rosecut diamonds.

Description : Classic Victorian pear or tear-shaped pendant earrings. Narrow at the top and widening to a rounded, rich curving bottom. Set with rose-cut diamonds. As was the custom, diamonds were set in silver which was thought to show them off to best effect in candle or gas light. Centers of the curved, rounded bottoms with raised, larger diamond - a standout above the border of smaller stones. A somewhat intermediary sized stone fills the gap between border and large gem.
Backs and mounts are in 18k gold. From the sides, we can see the solid, beautiful workmanship with a substantial lower layer of gold and the silver pillars holding the diamonds up between them. This is a rare and unusual way of setting the diamonds and indicative of the high level of workmanship and technical skill of the maker. Also indicative that diamonds had to be well matched and standard in size. This reflects the quality of the earrings.
Gold wires are almost certainly replacements. They are easy to insert and comfortable to wear.
These earrings are classic, fabulous, quality Victorian. While versatile enough to wear for any occasion, they are especially suitable for night attire when the glisten, gleam and twinkle of the diamonds will really stand out. Also highly suitable as an engagement, wedding or graduation gift for a young woman to mark an important occasion in her life.

Marks and Metal: Gold tests at least 18k. White metal was appraised as silver, but our electronic tester says platinum. We will go with silver to err on the side of caution.
