Antique Victorian Gothic Revival etui bodkin case sewing chatelaine accessory. Sterling silver. Made by Unger Brothers (1872-1910), Newark, New Jersey. Circa 1890-1905.
Measurements : 5 3/4 inches long; Weighs 24.6grams.
Triangular shaped, tapering towards the bottom. The entire top surface is richly embellished in repousse sterling silver with an open-mouthed mask or masqueron, typical of the Gothic era and Revived in the late Victorian period. Scrolling agricultural scene with details such as a sheath of corn displaying the richness of many kernels and at the bottom, a tiny acorn. Fleur des Lis, ribbons and scrolls in fine detail. An opening and loop at the back, make hanging the item from a hook or chatelaine possible.
An etui held household implements, especially sewing accessories. A bodkin was a large needle sewing tool for threading ribbons or lace.
Marks: Unger Bros interlaced U & B as well as STERLING 925 FINE.
