Georgian Necklace Pendant Detachable Cross Crucifix 15k Gold Garnet (6580)
Late Georgian Necklace with removable Cross Crucifix pendant. 15k gold, garnets. Made in England, late 18th to early 19th century.
Measurements: Length of necklace is 16inches (41cm). Pendant, excluding the loop is 2 1/4 inches (6.5cm) long. Weight 27.9gms
Description : Riviere necklace of foiled garnets enclosed in gold. Garnets are between a round and an oval in shape and are slightly graduated in size, with the biggest gems in the middle and tapering towards the extremities. Pie crust collette mounts that are angled on the sides, to hold and facilitate the shape of the gems. Small gold loops connect the stations. Deep red color with warm glow. The pendant is entirely detachable. There is a long loop on the back of the middle gem of the necklace and a small loop at the top of the crucifix easily hooks over this. There is a concealed tongue-in-groove or push-piece clasp. In addition, a safety chain that appears to be silver was added at a later date. There is a metal bar on the back which helps stabilise the cross. Entirely hand made, the necklace is subtle, high quality and has a wonderful, solid feel to it. The garnets are richest red, glowing with light alluding to distant times and fireing our imaginations with images of royalty, wealth and luxury in candle-lit settings. Mysterious and beautiful.
Marks: No marks found. The gold stays very strongly for 14k and quite well for 18k when tested with acid.
Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age and use. Louping the back of the clasp, there is a tiny section of solder work. This cannot be seen when the necklace is worn and is mentioned only for the sake of accuracy. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
