Antique Victorian cross pendant. 18k gold, guilloche enamel and natural pearls. Made in London, England circa 1880 by Carlo Giuliano.
Measurements: Weight is 7.8 grams. 1 1/16th inches (3cm) long, not including the bale.
Description : Cross with equally long arms, the ends connected via triangles. The cross is outlined in gold and set with pearls in its entirety. The terminals have gold globules, which is a reference to the Etruscan Revival style for which Castellani and Giuliano were famous. The triangles connecting the terminals have orange guilloche enamel grounds and are set on the very edge with pearls. The delicacy of the workmanship is breathtaking. The subtlety of the bright yellow gold, orange and pearls is stunning.
Quality of workmanship very much a reflection of the reason for Giuliano being called "the Master of Master Jewelers".
A large, oval bale provides for a chain of any size and is also typical of Giuliano jewelry.
It appears that this pendant was very rarely worn, but lovingly handed down from generation to generation. See condition below.
At the time this pendant was made, there were only natural pearls. There is absolutely no sign that any of the pearls have been tampered with or replaced. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the pearls are all natural.
The pendant comes in its original hexagonal fitted box, typical of Giuliano. Purple velvet outside, blue silk and velvet inside with gold embossing inside the lid. Hinge and clasp in good, working order.
Marks and Metal: CG mark in an oval slightly below the bale. Embossing in lid : Crown (indicating that the Queen was a customer) C. GIULIANO 115 PICCADILLY LONDON.
Condition: Very good condition. No losses, damage or wear to be seen. Like the pendant, the box is in very good condition. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
