Antique Tiara or diadem. Gold, pearls, tiny diamonds. European.  19th century.  GIA certificate for natural, saltwater pearls.

Measurements:

Weight is 29.5grams. Gold is 3 5/8 inches (9.5cm) across in a direct line and 4 1/8 inches (11cm) along bottom curve (not counting wires).

Description :

Triangular in shape with arching bottom edge and wavy, undulating sides. Sections are not on a single plane, but sculpturally, vary in depths and heights, subtly adding optical interest and stability. Sections are of two types: a) radiating golden bands that form patterns directing the eye in different directions; b) finely pearl set areas in arcs, quadrants, arches, fans and other shapes. Interspersed amongst these are medium sized pearls that catch the light and add further interest.
The bottom middle edge section is in the shape of a shell, beautifully set with pearls in golden sections and with a pearl at it's upper center and a further 5 pearls along the upper edge leading the eye outwards towards the sides. The upper edge is in a lobed arch, similarly beautifully set with pearls, but with a pair of half circles, each with inner half circles in gold and golden bands radiating outwards.
On top and on the sides are the 3 largest pearls. These were tested by the GIA as natural, saltwater pearls. (see certificate). These pearls are mounted with tiny diamond accents.
The tiara has a velvety-covered curved band attached to its arched, lower edge. It can easily bend to suit the shape of the head or accommodate the hairstyle. The sides end in gold loops that can be tied to ribbons or clips to further secure the tiara / diadem on the head.
The mount behind the central large pearl was replaced and is gold-plated silver.

Marks and Metal:

No marks. Gold electronically tested, varies in purity, which is typical of antique jewelry. Mostly it is 15k, but some spots measure 10k.

Condition:

Good with minor wear commensurate with age. See above.  Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.

THE STORY:

Antique tiaras are rare. Worn as symbols of rank, status and style, the history of tiaras encompasses royalty and nobility and offers us insights into the grandest courts.A tiara with natural pearls is a true find. THroughout history, natural pearls were a rarity. One in thousands of molluscs went through the arduous process of placing thin layers of nacre, one over the other to produce the natural pearl. Over a hundred years ago, a pearl necklace was exchanged by Cartier for an entire Manhattan city block and building. The ultimate symbol of power and wealth for the likes of Queen Elizabeth I, was the pearl.

Natural pearls are no longer produced thanks to the pollution that we have caused in the oceans. Currently, there is a frenzied trend desperately seeking out these rare gems of Mother Nature. They are now more sought after than diamonds and prices are steadily rising - already having reached breathtaking amounts.  While we did not test each tiny pearl in this tiara, we did have the largest pearls tested by the GIA and the certificate, stating that these are natural, salt-water pearls will go to the new owner.
Not only a beautiful hair accessory fit for a royal occasion or ball, but a great conversation piece and true investment.
