Description:
A stunning example of 19th-century French craftsmanship, this Napoleon III-era Victorian double picture frame is exquisitely cast in gilt bronze.
At the top, a loop behind an elaborate ruffled ribbon in rich gold bronze. This suspends a pair of floral swags of fine, delicate floral and foliate detail. Flowers in full bloom and in bud, each petal beautifully depicted. Lush blooms and budding petals in high-relief, each sculpted with exceptional delicacy and realism.
The swags end in a pair of intricately rendered chrysanthemums anchoring the design at the base of the swags and supporting two round picture frames.
Each round frame is encircled with a refined double-leaf and bud motif, echoing the naturalistic design language of the piece.
Below, a sweeping floral garland arches beneath both frames, adding graceful movement and unity to the composition. Finishing the design, floral tassels elegantly descend from beneath each frame.
The craftsmanship reflects the ornate luxury and romantic sensibility of the Second Empire period, characteristic of the Napoleon III style.
