Antique Victorian earrings ear pendants. Silver, gold, diamonds. Made 19th century, South of France.
Measurements: Weight is 14.4 grams. 1 inch (2.5cm) long, not including the wires.
Description : Double flower form with the floral theme extended on the structural level. Both flowers are significant in size, with the larger at the bottle, forming something of a double gourd in shape. Each section composed of internal flower with a rosecut diamond in its center. Held in a double border of crimped, fluted silver, appearing as tiny petals. These are surrounded by a V or zigzag pattern of silver borders, each enclosing a smaller rosecut diamond. The upper and lower section are cleverly designed so that this zigzag pattern is integrated between them. While not quite half hoops, the earrings arch, to add further elements of design and interest. Sturdy and strong, well made and highly attractive.
Simple gold wires are likely replacements. They are easy to replace and comfortable to wear.
Marks and Metal: No marks found. Wires electronically tested as 18k; backs of earrings electronically tested a tad under 14k.
Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
THE STORY: French provincial jewelry is not as delicate as its Parisienne counterpart. However, it has a lot more personal charm and creativity. These unique earrings are a fabulous example of unique, original design, loved and worn for well over a hundred years and as wearable today as it was then. The complex workmanship and detail could never be re-created today - the skills are lacking and noone would invest the time and effort into making earrings as the cost of the labour would be prohibitive. A fabulous remnant of a world when care and pride was lavished on jewelry both in regard to quality and to national flavor and identity.
