Antique Victorian bangle. Gold filled. Made late 19th century.
Measurements:
Weight is 5.9 grams. Outside length is 2inches.
Description :
Slightly oval in shape. Gold-filled. Upper half of the bangle engraved on the outside with pretty patterns of flowers, scrolls and bright cut engraving. Lower half is undecorated. Bright cut engraving is usually associated with Georgian jewelry, but we believe this bangle is somewhat later.
Small thumb piece to facilitate clasp. The clasp includes an elongated gold section that facilitates ease of pulling the bangle over the child's fist. Clicks closed easily and securely.
Marks and Metal:
A number of mostly illegible characters (numbers and letters) are engraved on the inside of the bangle.
Condition:
Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Light surface scratching visible with a loupe/magnifying glass. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
THE STORY:
During the Victorian era, it was common for children, from the youngest age to be dressed with jewelry. In particular, gold bangles were popular. It was especially common to use gold-filled metal, which was a substantial layer of gold over a layer of another metal such as silver.
