THE STORY:
Gold filled jewelry is composed of a metal covered by a layer of solid gold tht equals 1/20th of the weight of the item. The covering layer is thicker than gilding or plating. (see looking at jewelry). The gold had to be 1/20th of the thickness of the total metal, hence the engraved 1-20 inside the bangle.
