Antique Meiji (late Victorian) trinket box. Shibayama inlaid mother of pearl, shell and coral trinket box with flowers and insect / bug and butterfly decoration. Made in Japan during the Meiji period - 19th - early 20th century.

Measurements:

Measures slightly under 2 1/2 inches in diameter and a little over 1 1/8 inch high.

Description:

A stunning antique Japanese Shibayama trinket box, exquisitely inlaid with mother of pearl, coral, and shell, depicting delicate floral motifs, butterflies, and insects. Crafted during the Meiji period (late 19th to early 20th century), this piece showcases the meticulous artistry characteristic of Shibayama work.

The lid is richly adorned with intricate inlays of butterflies, flowers, and foliage, composed of mother of pearl and coral, further enhanced by finely engraved details. The interior of the lid features a tiny beetle, seemingly crafted from dark shell, so finely detailed that it is only visible under magnification. Additional beetles—one in coral and another in mother of pearl—are discreetly placed inside and on the bottom of the base, adding to the charm and craftsmanship of the piece.

The box is constructed with a removable central disk at the base, a unique feature that adds to its intrigue.

Condition:

Overall, the trinket box is in very good condition. One flower on the lid appears to be a later replacement, as it lacks the same level of fine craftsmanship as the original work. A small amount of natural material has worn away inside the lid, though this is not visible from the exterior.

This exquisite piece is a testament to the artistry of Meiji-era Japan, making it a remarkable addition to any collection of antique decorative arts.
