Antique Georgian pocket watch holder. Gilded bronze. Made in France, circa 1780-1810 (Louis XVI - First Empire period). Can be used as a paperweight.
Measurements:
Base is 5 inches long and 3 inches at wides point. Approximately 4 inches high. Weighs approx 1150grams.
Description:
Ormolu (gilt bronze) sculpture of a dog, either a French poodle or a curly-coated Spaniel such as a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He stands on a gilt bronze base, oval with truncated ends. The legs and back of the dog have been shaved in true poodle style, Leaving a shaggy mane and head, fanning tail and pompoms above feet. The long full tail and floppy ears hint more at the Spaniel family than a poodle, but dog styles have changed over the last 200 years. The coat is fabulous: curls and curls of gold. A fine collar with a loop around his neck. Loop under mouth to hold a pocket watch.
Lovely modelling and gold patina. Combined with the desireable dog subject and rarity of the item, this is quite a unique antique. Heavy weight helps prevent a fall. Also adds versatility as it can be used as a paperweight on your desk.
Marks and Maker:
we found no marks of any sort on the watch holder. It is certainly French and most likely late 18th century.
Condition:
good with minor wear and discoloration commensurate with age. Please see 'photos and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
Please NOTE:
The watch is NOT included with the watch holder and is just to give an idea of it's use.
We have a pair of French 18th century gilt bronze poodles/spaniels very similar to this dog, who serve as bookends. Please enquire.
