Antique necklace. Made by the Muong tribe in Northern Vietnam approximately 150 - 180 years ago. Mainly copper (85%) with 3.1% zinc; 10.53%nickel and traces of tin.
Measurements:
Weight is 46.2 grams. A little under 5 inches (12.5cm) across.
Description :
A torque (torc) or collar necklace made of copper mixed with some other metals. A sturdy, solid, cylindrical form that is subtly wider in front and tapering towards the opening at the ends. At the furthest ends, where the two sides meet the narrowest part of the band dips and loops back on itself, in the form of a gentle stem and elegant lotus leaf.
Easily pull sides open to facilitate getting around the neck or enlarging for a bigger neck.
The metal is malleable, so you can pull the necklace open or push it closed to fit over your neck.
An example of ancient forms that look as modern as anything made today. Simplicity as the ultimate form of elegance.
Marks and Metal:
none. We took the torc to have the metal professionally analysed. See above.
Condition:
Good with negligible wear commensurate with age and use. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
THE STORY:
Ethnic, tribal groups make up a small percentage of Vietnam's population. They are mainly found far from the cities, in the mountains and are known for their beautiful textiles and jewellery, using materials available to them. Jewellery was made for their personal use and not to be sold. However, for economic reasons, some jewellery comes onto the market, but it is quite rare and difficult to find. What is really wonderful about this necklace / collar is that it looks so fresh, clean and modern. Simple lines with a beautifully elegant and subtle detail that look as 21st century as antique. I find it feminine and intrigueing.
The person who sold us this torc is a retired architect whose life-long passion is Vietnamese antiques. While he has huge personal knowledge of the tribes and artifacts, he has no modern technology to test metals.
In retrospect, perhaps this necklace should have stayed in Vietnam and not come to the USA. However, it does offer a new owner the opportunity to enjoy an almost mystical piece of jewelry.
