Antique Nose Ring Nath.  18-22k Gold Gem Paste Pearls. Made in India, circa 1900 - 1940

Measurements:

At widest point, the nath measures 1 3/8  inches (34mm) across.  Weighs 4.2 grams.

Description:

A captivating example of traditional Indian jewelry, Handmade in India early 1900's, it reflects both cultural significance and fine artisanry. The nose ring was a symbol of a married woman's status and strong spiritual associations.  This nath features a classic crescent-shaped design with a gold wire completing the loop. A delicate cluster of pearls and antique glass paste stones accents one end, where the gold wire is secured with a traditional loop mechanism. The surface is embellished with pearls of various sizes, likely natural basra pearls, but untested.  Paste is red and green - in immitation of rubies and emeralds, most beloved Indian gems.

Between the 6 and 7 o’clock position, a kundan-style collet setting holds a transparent white gemstone—possibly quartz, based on testing. The pearls are held in place by finely woven gold wire, visible on the reverse, and small decorative gold nodules enhance several of the pearls.

Marks:

No marks as is to be expected of Indian jewelry of this age. We acid tested the gold, which stays for 22k.  Electronic testing shows gold at least 18k and 22k depending on where on the same wire we test. This is typical of hand-made antique gold, which is not homogenous in purity.

Condition:

Minor wear commensurate with age. The pearls can do with a light dusting, but we don't like to interfere with the condition of antique jewelry.  Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.

THE STORY:

In Indian tradition, nose rings (naths) are more than decorative—they symbolize marital status and hold spiritual significance. This piece is a graceful reflection of that heritage.
