Antique Georgian micromosaic brooch pendant locket. 14k gold, mosaics, glazed compartment. Made in Rome, Italy, late 18th to circa 1800. See comments on outer border below.

Measurements: Weight is 14.8 grams. 1 3/8 inches (3.5cm) long. 28mm wide.

Description : An oval micromosaic, very finely set with minute tesserae. Tesserae of various shapes and sizes, but closely set with minimal gaps between them, creating a painterly effect. Depicts a recumbent spaniel dog. White with brown spots and brown ears. He lies in a naturalistic landscape. We can see individual blades of grass and tiny flowers in the foreground. A hint of mountains under the pale blue sky. The entire micromosaic is surrounded by a ring of red dots, partly hidden by the gold inner mount.
Simple gold inner border, surrounded by a very beautifully made gold, floral border. The outer border is possibly English as it displays very high quality workmanship and floral theme, typical of English Georgian jewelry. The gold back with glazed locket compartment, hinged pin with C-clasp and a loop, so that it can be hung as a pendant.

The micromosaic is in the manner of Antonio Aguatti, late 18th century. Antonio Aguatti came from a dynasty of very famous mosaicists in Rome. We found a signed Aguatti micromosaic with 2 dogs in a landscape. The spaniel almost identical to the one in this micromosaic. Other micromosaics with the same spaniel are also described in the manner of Antonio Aguatti eg in the Conte collection.

Marks and Metal: No marks, as is to be expected. Gold was electronically tested.

Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
