Antique Georgian brooch. 14ct gold, garnets, crystal. Made in England, early 19th century.

Measurements: Weight is 5.8 grams. Length is a little over 1 inch (26.5mm).

Description : A lovely example of a Georgian garnet brooch. Rounded rectangular center with a beautifully modelled frame of gold featuring scrolling foliage. Within is a solid gold inner frame enclosing a crystal cover of a locket. The back with a glass cover over a swathe of woven hair. This could be in Memorial of a loved one or merely a romantic gift from one person to another.

Radiating around the central rectangle is a circle of oval garnets. Flat tops with very gentle facets on the sides. Typical of the Georgian period and much beloved by the English at the time. The garnets are typically enclosed in gold, which adds mystery and light to these gems that glow a rich red. Round gold beads connect the garnets to one another. Marks and Metal: No marks, as is to be expected of jewelry from this period. The gold was acid tested and stays for 14k.

Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. At the back, the gold has a few dings and the pin is clearly a replacement. The c of the clasp is original. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.

We can only test for 14k, but since the English used 15ct, it is most likely 15ct gold.
