Antique late Georgian brooch. 14k yellow gold, banded agate and turquoise. Made in England United Kingdom circa 1830.
Measurements: Weight is 6.2 grams. Length a little under 1 1/2 inches (a little over 3.5cm).
Description : Lozenge shaped brooch. 14k yellow gold filigree and granulation with coiled 3-d filigree cannetille work. The mid-line is set with 3 round cabochon banded agate stones, largest in the middle. They are surrounded by smaller turquoise cabochons.
Gems held in closed collets with very pretty design to the edges - a detail not immediately visible to the naked eye, but indicative of the care the maker took in creating this brooch.
Outer border with waves reminiscent of Indian patterns give soft edges and add interest.
Lovely contrast between colors of gems and yellow gold. Also, interesting contrast between strong cabochon shapes and finely detailed cannetille design and workmanship.
A lovely brooch as versatile and wearable today as it was almost 200 years ago. Suitable for a man or a woman.
Pin is a base metal replacement.
Marks and Metal: gold acid tests as at least 14k. Hand-engraved '1850' behind central cabochon.
Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Minor discoloration to turquoise. As mentioned, pin is a base metal replacement. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
