Antique Art Deco ring black opal diamonds white gold great life gleam (7587)

Antique Art Deco ring. Black opal, diamonds, white gold. Origin possibly Great Britain. Made early 1900's to Art Deco era.

Measurements:

Weight is 3.2 grams. A tad under a US 5.5. Length of bezel 15mm. Opal approximately 2.33ct. 

Description :

A classically designed ring with an oval opal in the centre, surrounded by a ring of diamonds. The opal is held in place by 4 'straps' - shaped prongs, each also set with small rosecut diamonds. The shoulders continue the pave set diamonds which lead to a simple white gold band.  
The major color combination in the opal is blue and green, with a fabulous glow.  Depending on the light, there are small flecks of yellow, orange and red that add richness and interest. While many opals, including the darker opals are dull and flat, this gem is beautifully alive and glittery. The slight roundness of the stone can be seen in the pictures which show reflections that somewhat distort the appearance of the color play. Note the beautiful color as seen without the reflections when looking from the back.

The simple, geometric design with fine detailed workmanship place this ring in the early 20th century - Art Deco period. 

Marks and Metal:

No marks were found. Metal was electronically tested. The bezel tested 15k gold, while the band tested 18k. In previous ages, it was common for metals to be less homogenous than they are today. 15k usually indicates an origin of Great Britain. 
     

Condition:

Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Opal in lovely condition.  Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.   

THE STORY:

While the workmanship and design are classic and eternally attractive, the real story of this ring is clearly the fabulous opal. With some gems, it's not so much the size of the stone, but the intensity and vibrancy of the colors that set it apart from the masses and make it all the more valuable.
