Antique Victorian Pendant Locket 18k Gold Diamonds Onyx Silver (7175)

Antique Victorian pendant locket. 18k gold, diamonds, onyx, silver. Made late 19th century - circa 1880's - 90's. Measurements: Weight is 30.6 grams. Length is approximately 2 1/2 inches (a little over 6cm). Description : Exceptionally beautiful and elegant pendant locket. Carved from timeless, polished black onyx, the locket is a large, rounded oval. It is suspended via links from a bow surmount, which could be removed and there is a large loop at the top of the locket from which to suspend it. The bow with double gold, large loops, making it possible to thread a large chain or ribbon through them. The bow and the face of the pendant are pave set with rose-cut diamonds. The diamonds follow the shape of the ribbon of the bow. On the pendant, they form a botanical design of exquisite delicacy with tiny flowers and foliage gently arching over the surface. Gold wire work suspends the silver set diamonds - it must have been painstaking work to produce this fine combination, but the result is fabulous. Links connecting top and bottom allow a fair amount of movement between them. The back of the pendant has a large, glazed compartment to hold a portrait or lock of hair. It is contained in a gold frame that sits securely in the mount, but can easily be removed to place/remove the contents of the locket. Exquisitely designed and made, this pendant will make as much of an impact today as it did over 100 years ago. Marks and Metal: We did not find marks. The pendant was bought in Paris from a highly regarded collector who believed it to be French. We did test the gold to ensure metal purity. Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age.
