THE STORY:

the magic of a lithophane lies in its translucent porcelain surface, which is intricately carved in varying thicknesses. When backlit, these variations allow light to pass through at different intensities, revealing a detailed image that almost appears three-dimensional. Something like a cameo. While most lithopanes are devoid of color and therefore a little dull, this is a rare polychrome, naturalistically painted example.  It's a beautiful blend of sculpture and light art that dates back to the 19th century.
