Description :
A locket pendant in the shape of a heart. The entire surface on the top is richly encrusted with a mix of antique cut diamonds, typical of the period. The diamonds are pave set in platinum, a hallmark of fine early 20th century French craftsmanship. At the back is a covered locket insert, bordered in gold. The locket opens to hold a picture or keepsake such as hair of a loved one. The locket insert sits securely in place, but is quite easy to remove/replace.
A relatively large bale (loop) is also platinum encrusted with diamonds to match those on the heart.
The heart shaped design is deeply significant and has great charm.
Quality of workmanship is outstanding: the diamonds are very closely pave set with minimal evidence of the metal holding them in place. The surface arches gently to give a rich, rounded appearance that further enhances the sense of luxury.
A romantic and substantial antique jewel, perfect for collectors of fine French jewelry or anyone seeking a timeless diamond statement piece with history and charm.
Marks and Metal:
French hallmarks. Loop is hallmarked with Masked Man for platinum 850 and a part of a maker's mark lozenge that is illegible. A horse head, partially worn away is also on the loop. The gold border of the fitted back has a small protrusion with the horse head, used 1838-1919 to indicate 18k gold. Another mark behind it is illegible.
Condition:
Very good antique condition with no notable wear or damage. Locket works well and glass is intact. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
THE STORY:
Perhaps the heart is the most widely recognized symbol in humanity, recognized by the Ancient Egyptians and Greeks to children of today. The form is deeply significant and connotes a great depth of emotion. Rich with history, it has place to personalize with mementos of your own loved ones.
