WIESE Antique Renaissance Revival Ring 18k Gold Cameo Diamond Enamel Unisex(7055)

Antique Victorian Renaissance Revival ring. 18k gold, agate cameo, diamonds and enamel. Made in France circa 1890 by Louis Wiese. Measurements: Weight is 6.7 grams. US size 6. Description : Renaissance Revival ring made 19th century in Paris, where the Renaissance style was very popular, as it was in Rome and London at the time. A Classic oval cameo carved from hardstone agate depicts a cherub with an arrow. The cameo appears to originate during the Classic period of Greece and Rome, but we have no way of dating it accurately. Mythological cherubs like this were very popular with both Jules and Louis Wiese and can be found in many of their works, including larger silver vessels. The oval cameo is set in a gold mount with scrolling borders. The sides are 'stretched' out to form a gentle kite shape with scrolling white cardinal points ending in black enamel globules. Wonderful detail, enamelled in red, green, black and white with the gold metal forming outlines and accents. Preceding the cardinal points are 4 table - cut diamonds, very much in the Renaissance tradition, beautifully set in square gold colletts. The twisted gold shank is possibly a replacement. The ring is suitable for a man or a woman. Quality of the work is superb and reflects the reputation of the father (Jules) and son (Louis) Wiese, who were possibly the premier goldsmiths of the time. Marks and Metal: Engraved WIESE mark indicates Louis Wiese. Outside of the ring has eagle head mark for French 18k gold. Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age.
