Antique Victorian to Edwardian long chain necklace / sautoir. Gold and enamel. Made late 19th to early 20th century - circa 1900. Most likely made in Switzerland.

Measurements:

Weight is 32.8 grams. Approximately 50 inches (127cm) long, not including the lobster clasp.

Description :

A very long chain that can be wound round the neck multiple times. Composed of alternating repousse gold and enamelled gold sections connected by small round gold links.
Repousse gold is gold, beaten from underneath to form a pattern. These links are composed of double (back and front) elongated sections with intricate shell, flower and scrolling patterns. Identical on either side (back and front).
The enamelled sections are tubular and divided lengthways into 4 lines of enamel: two with black and two with blue grounds, each section with various colored horizontal stripes in pastel shades: pink and turquoise on the black and yellow and green on the blue. Each colored stripe seperated from the others by a white enamel and gold stripe in the opposite direction.
Enamel work is most likely Swiss.
A lobster claw allows a pendant to be connected and hung from the chain should the wearer so wish. The lobster claw is decorated with the same enamel work as the links in the chain.

Marks and Metal:

There are no hallmarks to be found.
The gold links of the necklace test as 18k. The lobster clasp is difficult to test but at least 16k and the enamel links cannot be tested because the enamel confuses the electronic tester.

Condition:

Good with minor wear commensurate with age.  Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.

THE STORY:

The chain is extremely versatile and can be used and worn in a variety of ways. In addition, the lobster claw allows a pendant to be attached as additional adornment, should the wearer so desire.
While there are no hallmarks to be found, the quality of this chain indicates either French or Swiss manufacture. Since the French always hallmarked their jewelry, it must be Swiss.
