Antique Earrings Gold Garnets Spanish daisy flowers Barcelona (7454)
Antique earrings. 18k gold and garnets. Made in Spain, circa 1900 or earlier - see below.
Measurements: Combined weight is 6.1 grams. 5/8 inch (1.5cm) in diameter. Central garnets are approximately 3/8th inch (9mm) in diameter.
Description : Flower shaped. A large centre with 7 petals radiating around it, all set with old cut garnets. The stones are held in gold colettes with triangular prongs holding them in place and adding a subtle element of interest. All stones are enclosed in gold at the back. The centre is raised high above the level of the petals and the colette has raised triangles that are the reverse side of the prongs.
Garnets gleam orange against the gold. Color ranges from bright to deep shadow, depending on the angle of light that catches the facets. Central garnets are unusually big (see above).
Wires go through ear lobes with hinged lever-back closures.
Very well made and sturdy. Simple and elegant.
Marks and Metal: No marks found. Antique gold is not homogenous, but tests as 18k, which is the usual minimum standard for antique Spanish gold.
Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
THE STORY: From Barcelona, Spain. These earrings were sold to me as having been made circa 1900. Possibly, they are much earlier with the wires original and the lever backs added during the later 19th century. There is no sign of soldering, but the closed backs give me cause for 2nd thoughts as do the cuts and general appearance of the stones, which look more Georgian than Victorian.
Regardless of the exact date, these are versatile, highly wearable earrings. Put them on and never take them off.
