Antique Brooch Donkey Gold Diamonds Demantoid Garnet Ruby Sapphire Unisex(6917)

Antique late Victorian brooch. 14k gold, silver, diamonds, demantoid garnets, rubies and sapphires. Made in the United Kingdom late 19th century.  

Unisex - suitable to be worn by a man or a woman. 

Measurements: Weight is 6.4 grams. Approxximately 1 inch long (2.8cm). 

Description : Brooch in the form of a donkey with a large golden basket attached to a gold saddle and overflowing with goodies in the form of a pair of demantoid garnets, a pair of rubies and 2 sapphires. The entire body of the beautiful little animal is pave set with diamonds. His bridle and reigns are modelled in gold and has a demantoid garnet set below his ear. 

Ears point back as the little fellow stands quietly and waits patiently. A fine gold chain attached at the muzzle is connected to a small safety pin for additional security. Simple c-clasp, typical of the period. Interestingly, the backs of his legs and hooves have engraved detail, which is an indication of the care and effort expended in making this wonderful brooch. 

Quality of this brooch is very good. It is beautifully designed and very well made. Animal jewelry is rare and sought after and this is a particularly lovely example. The use of demantoid garnets places the jewel squarely in the period 1890 - 1910. 

Marks and Metal: No marks. Gold was acid tested to ensure metal purity.
