American. Made in Newark, New Jersey by Bippart, Griscom & Osborn. Circa 1900.

Measurements:

Weight is 18.3 grams. A little under 8 1/2 inches (21.5cm) long, a generous length that will comfortably fit a wrist of about 7 1/2 inches with plenty of space to spare.

Description :

Flexible bracelet composed of alternating sections of gold and turquoise cabochons in gold mounts, with a gold disc at either end.

The gold stations have an organic appearance, with the gentle, swooping movement of the curving, elongated Art Nouveau style. Each link is overlapped by a pair of flowers, one facing front and one facing back, with long and short foliage adding detail and graceful curves. Under a loupe, the flowers and foliage show great attention to detail in the textured surfaces.

The alternating stations are ovals of concentric gold frames around cabochon turquoise, set with closed gold backs. The turquoise appears natural (untested) and is well matched, with a soft greenish tone, as turquoise often develops with age. Together, the color of the turquoise and the gold flowers give an exceptionally pretty, feminine look. The sections are joined by small gold links that allow the bracelet to bend around the wrist.

The gold discs at either end depict a man and a woman in Renaissance dress. The man’s disc is finely engraved with the name ROMEO, and his partner, Juliet, has long, wavy hair adorned with a garland of flowers. It’s lovely to think that Romeo and Juliet are joined when the bracelet is closed.

Tongue-in-groove clasp is secure and in good working order. Very good quality workmanship. Lovely worn alone or stacked with other bracelets.

Marks and Metal:

Back of clasp is marked 14k with a flaming torch, the maker’s mark of Bippart, Griscom & Osborn.

Condition:

Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.

THE STORY:

Newark, New Jersey was one of America’s great centers of fine gold jewelry manufacturing, and Bippart, Griscom & Osborn was among its most respected firms, renowned especially for Art Nouveau jewelry. The business was founded in the mid-1880s by Achill Bippart as Bippart & Co., and took the name Bippart, Griscom & Osborn in 1901, when Benjamin Griscom became a partner alongside Bennet Osborn Jr. Among their contributions were a number of patents, including for bracelet mechanisms. In 1912 a Newark Board of Trade publication described the company as widely and favorably known throughout the American jewelry trade. When the business closed in the 1930s, its tools and dies were bought by Krementz & Co., another famous Newark maker. Today, signed Bippart pieces are sought after by collectors of American Art Nouveau jewelry.

Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers of Verona, have been the world’s most famous romantic couple for over four centuries. Their story enjoyed a great revival in the 19th century: the play was a favorite of the Victorian stage, Gounod’s opera Roméo et Juliette premiered in Paris in 1867, and visitors flocked to Verona to see “Juliet’s house.” By the time this bracelet was made, the lovers had become a universal symbol of romance.

Turquoise was a favorite stone of the period for sentimental jewelry, associated with true love and remembrance, a fitting choice to frame the two lovers. This bracelet makes a wonderful gift to oneself, a friend or a lover: an eternal reminder of beauty and love.

Note: any apparent difference in the color of the turquoise is due to the photo lighting. To the eye, the stones are very well matched, with only the tiny natural variations you would expect in genuine turquoise.

https://www.brendaginsberg.com/products/antique-art-nouveau-bracelet-14k-turquoise-romeo-juliet-signed-bippart-7718
