The openwork platinum gives strength to the mount and it allows as much light as possible to strike the gems from below, adding to lustre and shine. \u003cbr\u003eLaid above the platinum mount is a ring of wonderful, gleaming diamonds. They are set at an angle, sloping down towards the finger, giving the ring a ballet-dress or ballooning skirt appearance. In the center, raised in forked platinum prongs is a large rectangular emerald with canted corners. \u003cbr\u003eA traditional design, with French flair as shown in the quality of the gems and the subtle angles. Open space between the two heads, who are facing one another and both smiling or grinning.\u003cbr\u003eNecks lead to a pair of raised golden loop or cylindrical borders surrounding a winding rope-twist in gold, twisting about 7 times around the bangle. Another line of diamonds, decreasing in size leads to the final lateral drops, which is simplified versions of the first - tiny leaves with long drops ending in an elongated tear. Beyond this, the section of the necklace that leads to the clasp is quite fascinating. Again, it tapers in size towards the back. However, it is composed of small diamond stations and elongated tears, set at right angles to those on the drops. Some of the diamonds are larger and stand out more until the clasp is reached. \u003cbr\u003e   Similar designs are shown in Henri Vever's book on French jewelry of the 19th century for example page 518. \u003cbr\u003eThe clasp is a long, rectangular tongue-in-groove with the box holding the tongue being unusually long and slender and also pave set with diamonds, including one raised above the level of the others for additional interest at the back of the neck. At the point where the 3 lobes meet, is a much larger diamond. \u003cbr\u003eExtending slightly beyond the petal with the ruby, is a little stalk, also set with diamonds. During the Nouveau era, the elongated female figure, body twisting into organic and twining forms were inspired by artists such as Sarah Bernhardt and Rene Lalique. Since the period was very short - lasting a few years from late Victorian through the Edwardian era, there were not many examples made and those that did exist have been snatched up by museums and serious collectors. It is very rare to find an example of this quality, in this condition. Background of 'earth, lawn and dark sky tones'. The sky in black with tesserae forming concentric arches around the duck. The ground and grass go in a horizontal direction, giving the appearance of continuation. Tesserae of the Mallard in various directions and sizes appropriate to the form they are representing.\u003cbr\u003eThe micromosaic is an oval shape. From above we see that it is set in a simple, smooth, gold mount on two levels - one directly encircling the duck and one a step lower. Gold borders with simple bright cut designs, so fine that the naked eye cannot distinguish the detail. This is typical of Georgian work as is the simple gold mount in high karat gold (see metals below). Beautiful understated eternal. \u003cbr\u003eAt the back, we see the continuation of the mount with a hinged pin for wearing as a brooch. The pin is very likely a replacement, very common with jewelry of this age. The simple c-clasp is typically Georgian. \u003cbr\u003eA long tubular sleeve with a large bale has been set over the pin. This is probably a later addition, but it adds to the versatility of the piece and can be simply slipped off when not in use.\u003cbr\u003eThe back of the brooch contains a locket for holding a portrait or lock of hair of a loved one. It is easily removed and then re-inserted. \u003cbr\u003e The quality of this micromosaic is very good with the teeny-tiny tesserae very closely set. Wonderful coloring and craftsmanship. The original gold mount of the brooch was electronically tested as 20-21karats. High Karat gold was a typical feature of Georgian jewelry. Wealthy travelers brought them home to Britain as souvenirs. The trend peaked 1780 - 1830 which includes the Georgian and Regency eras.  \u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMallards were a popular theme with the Georgians and Victorians. These tiny flowers  offer a very subtle element of interest as they dangle below the leaves, swinging and swaying as the wearer moves. \u003cbr\u003eThe botanic theme continues with the gold upper sections of the flowers - very much like calyxes - the part of a bloom that holds the petals together. Very naturalistic and beautifully modelled, they are like little pixie caps. \u003cbr\u003eWithin each oval flower is a large oval pink topaz. Since these stones are enclosed in gold (as was the norm in Georgian jewelry), we don't know whether their bright pink tone is enhanced by the gold backing. \u003cbr\u003eThe different sections of the earrings are connected via small loops that allow total flexibility and movement adding to the visual attraction and draw of these fabulous ear pendants. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOriginal wires were replaced with screw backs for non-pierced ears, probably quite early in the 1900's.
