The bezel is an octagon of square proportions set with a deep red garnet, beautifully intaglio carved. The ring must have been owned by Royalty as it depicts crossing stems of fine foliage under a crown. An early signet ring - Since ancient times, intaglio carved rings were used as signatures - the carving was the equivalent of today's signature when pushed into wax or clay, leaving the impression of the wearer's house. They were therefore, strong symbols of power - whoever wore the ring, had the power. Rose cut diamonds are held on the shoulders by gold 'lobster' claws that scroll down the sides of the ring and twine with more golden foliage. The rest of the shank is simple, gold, unadorned as was usually the custom at the time. This ring could come from the portrait painting of many a European noble person, but it is as wearable and timeless today as it was back then. The ring can be worn by a man or a woman. A ring with a similar intaglio cut bezel, in cornelian, is shown on page 43 of Diana Scarisbrick's book on Rings and is dated 17th century. Yet another, even more similar ring, with a carved garnet, including a crown is shown page189 and described as the ring of Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden 1594-1632.

Marks and Metal:

As is to be expected in a ring of this age, there are no marks. The details of the processes used to make this work was a closely guarded secret. A thin layer of gold, engraved and cut out to depict a fantastic scene: a pair of huntsmen take aim at a deer in the center of the vignette. The deer is being attacked by a huge tiger-like dog. The elegantly twisting bodies are reminiscent of Persian and Indian miniature painting. The figures are surrounded by scrolling foliage and flowers. In the foreground, a small deer runs past one of the hunters. Fabulous detail. Slopes gently towards the margin. The centeral diamond, at the apex, is approximately 0.30ct. It is surrounded by a ring of rubies, quite well matched in color considering the period. Cut with large flat tables, typical of very old gems. A ring of smaller rosecut diamonds surrounds the rubies. Typical of antique jewelry right up to the early 20th century, diamonds were set in silver over gold and this is true here, as well as the outer ring of the mount, which is a solid pattern of crimped silver. The shoulders and upper part of the shank have a fascinating design of raised silver pegs, studs or nails - much like old Saxon jewelry - forming a foliate design, over gold. The rest of the shank is plain yellow gold. The back of the bezel as well as the entire inside of the shank are all gold and closed bezel from behind. There is a fascinating and obviously old large engraving on the inside of the shank XXVIII (Latin numbers for 28) which appears original to the ring. On either side of the back of the bezel are half circles of designs pointing away from the bezel and surrounding them are various arcs and simple engraved designs. The meaning of these engravings is a fascinating, mystery - possibly a significant date in the lives of giver and gifted; possibly intentionally cryptic so that no one but the wearer could understand the meaning.

Although this ring is going on for 300 years old, it is highly wearable. For almost 150 years, this name has been synonymous with the leading manufacturer of jewelry both from the technical and the artistic perspective. Considered the disciple of Castellani, CG came to London where he initially made jewelry for other top brands. However, his work was so outstanding that he eventually opened shop under his own name. His work reflects the Classical Revival obsessions of the late Victorians. It is increasingly rare and highly sought after throughout the world.
Snakes, have of course, been a popular theme in jewelry since the days of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. One side is set with diamonds and one mainly with garnets (and a diamond). The garnet adorned side is somewhat flatter than the diamond-set side. Deep red garnets are pear shaped. They have large flat tables with gently faceted, low sides rising out of their bezels. Beautifully matched stones in size and color, a pair of garnets form the side arms of the cross and 3 almost identical garnets form the upper and lower sections. A scrolling open foliate-like arch adds length and interest and is set at it's apex with a small diamond in a flower-form silver mount, below the loop bale. The garnets are securely held in very old style, simple bezel settings with barely a stud-like crimp to help hold the gems in place. The other side follows the pear-shaped form of the garnets, but is composed of rounded silver with raised scrolls modelled up the rising sides. The apex of each segment is set with a rose-cut diamond that rises out of the rounded setting. The way the metal rises with the gem set in the top center was typical of very early jewelry. A lot of rose cut diamonds of previous centuries are far from symmetric in their cut, with haphazard facets that do not compliment the gems. In this pendant, the diamonds are impressively cut and very symmetric for their age and the technical ability of the period. Although they are closed at the back, they rise out of their mounts very nicely and from what we can see, they are of an unusually clear and good color for diamonds of this period. As a result of these feature, these diamonds catch the light and glitter beautifully. The gold ring / bale is most likely a much later addition that allows the pendant to be worn on a regular chain. For hundreds of years, cross pendants have been the most widely worn form of jewelry. This wonderfully made and unusual cross is an example of antique jewelry that is as wearable today as it was hundreds of years ago. Gem stones are surprisingly well matched in size, shape and color. Clearly, this cross pendant was invested with a lot of time, cost and effort. This important cross is significant for its rarity, intrinsic value, and incredible history.

Marks and Metal:

None.

Condition:

Wear commensurate with age, but otherwise good condition. Most of us will never see a Castellani micromosaic in the Ancient Egyptian style, but there are some available by other makers such as out brooch #6840 with Pharoah portraits. This was aparrently a popular style of chain with this artist as we see it illustrated in 'photos of Art Nouveau jewelry in Alastair Duncan's book (see below). The pendant is attached to the chain by loops near the apex, so that it hangs with a rounded point at the top. Within the gold border are elongated sheathes of wheat overlapping one another. Langurous, elongated and elegant, this design is classic Art Nouveau. Due to the size of the pendant it is ideal for either a man or a woman. Another, smaller pendant, depicting a lotus or other flower is hung on the side of the chain. The floral theme goes well with the pendant. I suspect this is not original to the necklace and the new owner can either keep it or easily remove it. Henry Miault (1881 - 1960) Boulevard Malesherbes is well represented over 3 1/2 pages of illustrations in Alastair Duncan's book: The Paris Salons 1895-1914. Regarded as an artist sculptor as much as a jeweller, his jewelry is always naturalistically modelled representations of plants and flowers. The identical chain is shown on page 115 and a coronet with the same Wild Oats pattern on the same page.

Marks: The pendant has engraved Miault signature as well as French hallmarks - eagle head for 18k gold and maker's mark lozenge on the back. The hoop is very rare - upon first glance it is a simple gold band, but closer inspection shows that there are stations with raised gold bumps. These would be used to count special prayers and perform the same function as a regular rosary. In France, these bumps are known as chapelet, giving rise to the term chaplet in English. It serves the exact same purpose as a regular rosary. The person marks off each prayer by moving his/her finger to the next bead or bump.

The ring rosary is very, very rare. Initially, I assumed that it was French, but there are no hallmarks, which is quite unusual for jewelry from the late 18th century in France.
Rings like this were made from an even earlier period, the 16th century, during the Reformation in England. Clare Phillips, in her book on Jewels and Jewelry (page 36) explains: In England the Reformation resulted in the banning of what were considered particularly Catholic items... included rosaries....Recusant catholic use of the rosary ring rather than rosary beads increased as a more discreet way to count one's prayers - these rings had ten ridges around the hoop, on which to count the ten 'aves' that made up each decade or section of the rosary.
In her book on Rings, Diana Scarisbrick explains that the bezel (top of the ring, with the cross) was the part signifying OUR FATHER and then each bump is a HAIL MARY.
Thus, it is not at all definite that the ring is French as the English were making them 600 years ago. Had it been French from the late 1700's, it would have been hallmarked, although of course, with age and use, those would be worn away.

Clearly, this ring was used by its original religious owner and we should consider the idea of wearing a ring that such devout people wore centuries ago. As with almost all antique jewelry, we do not know who the many generations of women or men were who previously owned this ring. We can surmise a few things: These people were extremely devout and religious Catholics. They wore a small and unobtrusive, unostentatious ring to remind them and aid them with their constant prayers. From the smooth wear and patina of the ring, we know that it was well loved and well-used. How many people prayed and what did they pray about? My guess is that they had the exact same concerns then, as we have about our loved ones and families today. It is so easy to identify with the spiritual yearnings of men and women long since gone. We can cast our minds forward to the generations of people who will wear this ring in the future: men and women with the same hopes and prayers as those who came before. We will form the juncture between those past and those future.
I find this ring to be very moving.

Antique Georgian giardinetti brooch. During the late 19th century, the Victorians had a great sense of humour and whimsy and created wonderful figural jewelry, especially in the form of scarf/tie/cravat pins. In particular, Vever illustrates a number of such pins designed by Louis Rault for Boucheron eg page 899. (ours does not have a known maker). The pin is in the form of a nail or possibly a lamp with a jockey embracing it near the top. The jockey is wonderfully modelled with his arms and legs hugging and twining around the nail/lamp. He is wearing black boots with broad gold turnovers, jodhpurs of silver and a striped enamel and silver jacket. The body in yellow and sleeves in red. His jockey's cap is striped in silver and blue. Fine details to his face. Perhaps the figure lampoons and commemorates a particular event or person from the 19th century, but we will probably never know. It is clearly an amusing and beautifully made piece of jewelry, made to perform a function, as well as a great sense of humour. Great conversation piece. Typical of antique jewelry, it is made of a layer of silver over a layer of gold. This is in order to show the diamonds off to better effect. Pave set diamonds with great gleam and shine are individually of a larger size than we usually see in work of this nature. Engraved detail to paws and chin. Pin with c-clasp. 15ct gold was almost exclusively used in England and was discontinued after about 1930, so it is safe to assume the place and date of this lovely little fellow. Very sturdy, as is his breed, the brooch is perfect to wear by anyone - man or woman and is very versatile - can be worn with a jeans jacket or a tuxedo.

Marks and Metal:

The pin is marked 15Ct.

Condition:

Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. The animal lies on an elongated base with rounded ends, the border echoed in black enamel. The center of the base pave set with square jade stones. The cat faces right and lies with it's long tail curved along the front side. Finely modelled detail and textured surface of gold work. The majority of the body is composed from a natural baroque pearl. During the Renaissance period, jewels incorporated natural baroque pearls and were surrounded by jewels and gold. It is therefore likely that this brooch was made during the Renaissance Revival period, circa 1880, but it is possible that it is as late as the Deco era. While the cat could be 'just a cat', it does have overtones of the sphynx and influence of the Egyptian Revival obsession of the late 19th and early 20th century. The sturdy gold pin is original to the piece, which is quite rare as usually, they are lost/damaged/replaced. Even better is the elegantly shaped Stopper of the pin, with elegantly overlapping curves. Quality of work and materials is fabulous. Items like this are extremely rare, yet as wearable and novel today as they were over 100 years ago.

Marks and Metal:

There are a number of hallmarks on the pin. An animal head facing right could be the whippet, horse or eagle head. It appears once alone and once on the other side of the pin between a 750 mark and a maker's mark that has a small 3-leaved clover on the right. All of these marks indicate French, 18k gold.

Condition:

Good with negligible wear commensurate with age.
