The back & sides are entirely enclosed in gold. Engraved / chased flower and foliage decoration. The top is an amazing feat of the Indian master craftsman. The details of the processes used to make this work was a closely guarded secret. A thin layer of gold, engraved and cut out to depict a fantastic scene: a pair of huntsmen take aim at a deer in the center of the vignette. The deer is being attacked by a huge tiger-like dog. The elegantly twisting bodies are reminiscent of Persian and Indian miniature painting. The figures are surrounded by scrolling foliage and flowers. In the foreground, a small deer runs past one of the hunters. Fabulous detail. Most interesting is that one of the hunters is European as we can see from his hat, while the other, in the front is Indian, as we see from his head attire.

STORY:

According to Nick Barnard in his book on Indian Jewelry in the Victoria and Albert Museum, page 78, Thewa work was very popular with Europeans. A similar example is shown in the book and can be found in the V&A Museum. Glass was very highly regarding in India. This particular piece of glass is of a marvelous emerald green with a bright golden glow when the light catches it. Like most old Indian jewelry, this item is worn on a silk cord with a tassel. It was often worn by a man. The old, circular mounts have loops at the back and they could quite easily be adapted for a chain or other form of strap.

Condition

is very good.

Antique bangle bracelet. 22k gold set with diamonds, turquoise and minakari / minaar enamel. Jewelry created in this style has important cultural significance in almost every Asian religion. The arrangement of the gemstones is a metaphor for the universe and besides it's complex spiritual, cosmic and personal significance, offers protection to the wearer from all directions. See list of stones and their order below. The ruby, representing the sun, is always in the center. Due to their function as bracelets, these are extended Navaratna jewels, with the addition of extra gems as space fillers. They do not have any significance as far as we know. Magnificent and very rare old Mughal pair of bracelets. The tops of the octagon boxlike shaped sections are open, to hold a different-colored gem in a colette setting. The sides and back of each section are very richly enamelled in old Meenakari enamel work (enamel fused on metal), the predominant blue surrounding each gem on the sloping upper shoulders. Interesting exception of the central ruby of one bracelet, which has green enamel in this position. The backs of each section are richly enamelled with red flowers consisting of a central and 4 radiating discs of red enamel with green foliage at the cardinal points. Small gold beads form the stoppers at the terminals of the gem sections. These have been attached to replaced threading, making the bracelets as wearable today as they were 200 years ago. As with all Navaratna jewels, there is a particular order and significance to the gems, listed below. To add length, these bracelets each have the addition of two extra space filling sections, which are pink rubies and turquoise. The gems in the sapphire position do not check as sapphire and are possibly citrine (for the yellow) and iolite or topaz.

Marks:

none, as is to be expected.

Condition:

good with minor wear commensurate with age. Originally, the entire earring would go through enormously distended holes in the ear lobes as the hinges indicate. Originally, women would wear these in vastly distended ear lobes, not suitable for most modern women. Amazingly, as though these enormous earrings weren't enough, they were worn in conjunction with more ear ornaments higher up on the ear. Indian jewellers have found an elegant solution that allows the earrings to be worn by modern women without compromising the original earrings' form: fine gold wires have been threaded through the ends of the earrings and ear wires attached to them. These ear wires are fine enough for anyone with pierced ears to wear. (see pictures). As early as the Victorian era, much jewelry sold as English or European was, in fact, made in India — both the gems and the craftsmanship originating there, largely unknown to buyers at the time. By the 1920s, the tide had turned: Indian Maharajas began bringing their own jewelry to Europe to be reset, giving rise to some of the celebrated Art Deco pieces created by houses such as Boucheron and Cartier.

The exact origin and age of this ring remain something of a mystery — even the seller had no definite information on its history. Based on the Old Mine cut diamonds and the crimped collet settings, the ring likely dates to the 19th century; we have conservatively suggested "early 1900s." Flower-form rings were popular for centuries, so the design itself doesn't narrow the date, and the rarity of the continuous diamond band doesn't offer further clues either.

What is certain is that this ring will draw admiration wherever it's worn. We suspect therefore that the wires that go through the ears are replacements that make it easy for the modern woman to insert the earrings, easy to snap closed and of course to remove when desired.
Extremely versatile, wearable, comfortable and while small, have a great look.

Marks and Metal:

The earrings were later hallmarked with 750 for 18k gold and 14k585, which we believe is for the wires. Other unknown marks presumably comply with India's new laws to assay all items. It is likely that the hallmarking was done when the ear wires were added.

Condition:

Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.

THE STORY:

Small, generous ear hoops like this are extremely useful and attractive. It's difficult to pin-point the exact location and date of their origin since similar earrings were made in different areas and for many generations. While I was presented with many dramatic and impressive earrings in India, this is the pair I would choose for myself.

Antique archer's ring. 22k gold, enamel, diamonds. Made in India 19th century - early 20th century.

Measurements:

Weight is 5.6 grams. The Archer's ring is not exclusive to India, but was originated in China and existed in Turkey and Persia as well.
The archer's ring was worn on the thumb and has a different form to regular finger rings. The bezel (top) of the ring tapers to a rounded 'v'. The point of the 'v' is worn towards the wrist when the ring is actually used in archery. When used for ceremonial or status purposes, it points towards the tip of the thumb.
This elegantly curved archery ring in high karat gold, enameled in blue with traces of red enamel on the edges. The front of the bezel with a flowerhead inlaid with Polki (gently cut and polished) diamonds. See below.
Wear it on an finger of your choice and in either direction. - looks great on the hand. Unisex - suits either a man or a woman.

This ring is almost identical-looking to an example in green enamel sold at Bonhams, June 2020 with estimate of GBP 3000.00 - 5000.00 This ring is dated 19th century.
Another similar ring is shown on page 223 of the book 'Indian Jewellery Dance of the Peacock' by Usha R Bala Krishnan and Meera Sushil Kumar.

Marks and Metal:

No marks, as expected of antique Indian jewelry. Due to the rich enamel, it's difficult to get an exact electronic reading of the gold, but it is high - approximately 18-22k. The metal holding the diamonds is lower, which is typical for additional strength.

Condition:

Good with wear to enamel - shown highly magnified in pictures. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
Please note: the enlarged pictures show traces of red enamel. With the naked eye, these are not visible.

THE STORY:

Polki set diamonds: Indians refer to flat, unfaceted diamonds as 'polki' or 'uncut'. Traditionally in India, they are set in gold, with the gold pulled up around the diamonds, forming a cell that holds the stones. Polki diamonds are the high end of Indian jewelry (compared to kundan, which might include glass and lesser gems), and have a high value because of the intrinsic value of the gold and diamonds. While the diamonds are called 'uncut', they are in fact simply cut and polished, but they do not comply with the 4 C's as with most western jewelry. Some Polki diamonds resemble rose-cuts while others are more flat.

Archer's rings were worn to protect the inside of the thumb. They could have also been worn as a costume accessory, elaborately decorated with fine inlays.
An archer's ring, or thumb ring, is a protective device worn on the thumb of the drawing hand to protect it from the bowstring, particularly when using a thumb draw technique. They are also worn for status and prestige, often elaborately decorated with symbols to convey rank or ward off evil. Historically, archers' rings have been used in various cultures, including those in Asia and northern Africa, and are still used today by archers practicing certain styles.
A thumb ring provided the archer with a firmer grip of the bowstring. As archery was considered a noble sporting exercise, thumb rings, often carried ostentatiously on strings hung from the belt, were worn as symbols of elevated social status.
As mentioned, this ring looks great on any finger.
