Like almost all antique jewelry, gold was the metal used for most of the mount, while platinum was used in the section holding the gems. This was considered advantageous for viewing the gems in gas\/candle light. There are two main sections: the tops or surmounts are diamond-shaped. In the center is a relatively large rosecut diamond surrounded by an openwork border of similarly set diamonds that seems to float around the center. A pair of diamonds connected by loops on either side of the surmount sway in every direction. Loops connect the drops, which are elongated kite shapes of a similar openwork design to that of the top, but with a solid gold inner border. Again, the parts seem to float independantly of each other. The central diamond of this section is also connected to the main structure via loops, so that it too swings independantly. A bottom fringe of three more rose cut diamonds suspended from loops tremble and swing as the wearer moves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe solid gold wires go through the ears from back to front as was the system used universally to the end of the 19th century. Also typical of the 18th century are loops on the backs of the wires. Ribbons or chains would be attached to these and they would be tied to the hair, helping to support the weight of the earrings (which could be very large in some cases).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMetal is pulled over the diamonds, which is the way jewelry was set during most of the 18th century. The folds and 'rivets' in the metal are typical of jewelry from the Arles and Provence regions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese earrings are as wearable today and will look just as fabulous, as they did 200 years ago. From this branch a number of curving stems, each ending in a flower or bud and each flower or bud set with various gemstones - too small to have any value in themselves, but together, making a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Gems include turquoise, diamonds, emerald and either spinels or rubies (test is inconclusive). Gems are all closed at the back, which is the way they were set at that time. An early signet ring - Since ancient times, intaglio carved rings were used as signatures - the carving was the equivalent of today's signature when pushed into wax or clay, leaving the impression of the wearer's house. They were therefore, strong symbols of power - whoever wore the ring, had the power. Rose cut diamonds are held on the shoulders by gold 'lobster' claws that scroll down the sides of the ring and twine with more golden foliage. The rest of the shank is simple, gold, unadorned as was usually the custom at the time. This ring could come from the portrait painting of many a European noble person, but it is as wearable and timeless today as it was back then. The ring can be worn by a man or a woman. A ring with a similar intaglio cut bezel, in cornelian, is shown on page 43 of Diana Scarisbrick's book on Rings and is dated 17th century. Two smaller near the top and 3 larger in a line form a particularly long drop than terminates in a gold charm, somewhat squished on one side. The plaques are spectacular and include very fine gold work, exquisite enameling in various colors, imitation pearls, sapphires (blue paste) and turquoise gems. Quality of the workmanship and design is exquisite and of the highest order. The necklace is utterly magnificent and we consider it a true museum piece. The same black and white enamel in a lovely openwork design with black and white enamel on gold, beautifully sets of another, slightly larger turquoise and pearl flower. A very big look and will certainly catch every eye, yet light and comfortable to wear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pendant necklace has the same openwork decoration of scrolling gold with black and white enamel adornment. A trio of flowers in a row echo those above, with the central flower reversing the turquoise and pearl to a pearl surround and turquoise center.
