They are surrounded by scrolling foliage and accents, set with diamonds. Backs of topaz are closed, as is typical of jewelry of this period. It can be worn as a brooch, either with both or one part; as a brooch and pendant or as two pendants. In its entirety, it consists of a fan-shaped upper section like a stylised vase of flowers. This part is set with a large, oval topaz about double the size of those in the earrings. A further 3 pink topaz accent the bottom of scrolls. Lovely diamonds surround the topaz - a half ring around the top and scrolling foliage in an openwork setting connecting the other gems.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lower section of the brooch-pendant is connected to the top half via a small loop, allowing it independant movement. There are two main sections: the tops or surmounts are diamond-shaped. In the center is a relatively large rosecut diamond surrounded by an openwork border of similarly set diamonds that seems to float around the center. A pair of diamonds connected by loops on either side of the surmount sway in every direction. Loops connect the drops, which are elongated kite shapes of a similar openwork design to that of the top, but with a solid gold inner border. Again, the parts seem to float independantly of each other. The central diamond of this section is also connected to the main structure via loops, so that it too swings independantly. A bottom fringe of three more rose cut diamonds suspended from loops tremble and swing as the wearer moves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe solid gold wires go through the ears from back to front as was the system used universally to the end of the 19th century. Also typical of the 18th century are loops on the backs of the wires. Ribbons or chains would be attached to these and they would be tied to the hair, helping to support the weight of the earrings (which could be very large in some cases).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMetal is pulled over the diamonds, which is the way jewelry was set during most of the 18th century. The colette settings are very interesting with parallel engraved lines and wavy, curved tops, some of which extend right over the upper edge of the amethysts, holding them in the same way as a more modern claw setting. The color of the amethysts are wonderfully complemented by the gold. In contrast to the solid, strong stones, they are highly detailed with very fine filigree work that twists and spirals, forming 3-dimentional, sculptural forms, notably pyramidal forms. Golden spheres of differing sizes are intersperced between the filigree work and add interest and connect some of the openwork sections. An openwork shell of gold at the bottom. Gold wire fittins are almost certainly replacements, which is very common in Georgian earrings. They are easy to insert and very comfortable to wear. Workmanship is excellent.
