She is all togged up in warm clothes as though about to depart for the cold outdoors. A yellow scarf is tied jauntily in her curly chestnut hair, which matches the fur collar and cuffs perfectly. These are offset by the deep blue of her jacket and a bright red cloth wound around the leaning arm. Her face is exquisitely painted. Round and cherubic with an exquisite complexion and pale eyes. She is the epitomy of rich, voluptious luxury. Painting techniques of hatching and stippling are used as can be seen in the enlarged pictures. One team wearing European style clothes and hats, the other wearing turbans, Asian attire and sporting bristling moustaches. Galloping, prancing horses outstandingly depicted - the power and movement of these fine animals was clearly appreciated by the artist, who took pains to show them in marvellous detail.
Fascinating insight into the dress and style of both British and Indians of the 19th century.
The background, painted in lighter tones is no less interesting. On the left in a garden bower is a group of relaxing dignitaries. A cluster of Georgian style buildings can be seen in the center of the background, up on a hill, making it clear who the rulers were. On the right is a charming vignette of a large tree behind a wall and in the tree are perched the local population, who presumably were not invited to the game, but watch with no less interest.

The painting is exceptional, not only because of the detail and sensitivity of the artistry, but because it depicts an age and world gone by.

Marks:

pencil writing on the lower right, under the painting is not understood by us and could be later/original.

Condition:

Generally very good condition but the delicate paper is worn on the edges and the painting needs to be framed and protected.

Note: please enquire about the fascinating companion miniture painting of a horserider and British coat of arms, also from the British Raj and dating to the same period.

Handpainted miniature painting in the old Persian and Indian tradition. The Maharaja sits in his gold palanquin atop an elephant. Various important looking people ride camels both ahead and behind him. In one ox-drawn carriage, a lady is being driven by a pink-turbanned driver, while a group of 4 men carry another woman on her palanquin. A water carrier in the front traipses behind a noble on a prancing horse, while another small person drives a single deer behind a group of gentlemen on foot.
