The fabulous peacock combination of bright green demantoid garnets with bright blue sapphires, was also very popular and is totally stunning. Finally, the love of opals in their various forms was a huge trend at the time and again, the contrast between the opal and it's bright colors, picked up and echoed by the other gems. His work was bought by those who knew and understood fine jeweler. This part is set with a large, oval topaz about double the size of those in the earrings. A further 3 pink topaz accent the bottom of scrolls. There are two main sections: the tops or surmounts are diamond-shaped. In the center is a relatively large rosecut diamond surrounded by an openwork border of similarly set diamonds that seems to float around the center. A pair of diamonds connected by loops on either side of the surmount sway in every direction. Loops connect the drops, which are elongated kite shapes of a similar openwork design to that of the top, but with a solid gold inner border. Again, the parts seem to float independantly of each other. The central diamond of this section is also connected to the main structure via loops, so that it too swings independantly. A bottom fringe of three more rose cut diamonds suspended from loops tremble and swing as the wearer moves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe solid gold wires go through the ears from back to front as was the system used universally to the end of the 19th century. Also typical of the 18th century are loops on the backs of the wires. Ribbons or chains would be attached to these and they would be tied to the hair, helping to support the weight of the earrings (which could be very large in some cases).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMetal is pulled over the diamonds, which is the way jewelry was set during most of the 18th century. The folds and 'rivets' in the metal are typical of jewelry from the Arles and Provence regions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese earrings are as wearable today and will look just as fabulous, as they did 200 years ago. We tested the gems and while some are clarly paste, some appear to be natural. This is typrical of French provincial enamel work. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe center of the brooch is in black enamel with gilding, red and white enamel decoration and paste highlights. We originally thought this might be a marriage, but have subsequently discovered other work by Froment-Meurice that combines silver, gold and Bresse enamels. Furthermore, the paste gems set in the silver match those of the enamel work, indicating that they probably originated together. Please see 'photographs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have shown another similar example of the work of Francois-Desire Froment-Meurice in the pictures.
