Enamel plaques come in simple old ebonised wood frames. May / not be original to the plaques. Frames are interesting for their construction at the back with oval
applied rings holding the plaques in place.
Plaques are miniature portraits and vignettes of pastoral life in France during the 1700's. In one scene a mother holds a swaddled baby in her arms and feeds it with
a large spoon. A dish and pot at her side. A young child alongside holds a wonderful toy doll, clearly made of porcelain and stuffed fabric and points to the baby or
upwards in a religious gesture. The composition allows lots of place to show the lawn and shrubbery in the foreground and a landscape fading to a castle and
beautifully painted sky in the background. Rocks and trees with fine detail.
The 2nd plaque shows a similair vignette, this time the mother-baby duette is accompanied by a man, presumably the father/lover. The plate / bowl has fallen onto the
grass, but both parents are so engrossed in the baby that they do not notice. In this scene, a church and mountains are seen in the distance. Again beautifully
depicted rocky landscapes on one side and the side of a building on the other.
No signature or marks found. We have not taken them out of their frames.
Condition: generally very good condition considering their age and delicate nature of enamel on copper. There are some age cracks to the enamel, shown clearly in the
magnified photos, but they do not impinge on the quality of the plaques.
