16 inches (40.5 cm) long. Weighs 37.4grams.
Largest amethyst is 21.5mm long X 16.5mm wide. Total amethyst weight 67.90 carats.
Gradated amethysts of a wonderful purple hue with very good light and fire. Stones partially faceted, about the ultimate that could be expected of the period. They
are set in a lacy mount of 18k gold: openwork scrolls with beaded borders and rounded terminals. Smaller amethysts alternate between the larger. Clasp easy to
open/close and holds necklace securely.
The contrast betwen the high carat gold and the deep purple of the amethysts is striking and elegant ( this combination was used by royalty over the centuries).
There is also a wonderful contrast between the delicate openwork of the gold and the transparent glowing, but solid stones.
Magnificent design and execution. The necklace makes any woman look like a queen. Because the Georgians used very thin sheets of gold, the necklace is not unduly
heavy, so it is also comfortable to wear.
Hallmarked in the area on and around the clasp.
Very good condition.
