Handpainted miniature portrait of a man, oil on ivory in original old frame with t-shell surround and woven locket of hair in the back with a gold monogram. Probably English, 18th century.
Frame measures 6 X 5 1/4inches. Length of ivory is 2 1/4inches.
Blue-turquoise ground with dark-haired, portly gentleman in a dark suit. The artist's talents are clearly seen in the masterful depiction of the cloth of the jacket, the expressive face and details of skin, eyes, and mouth.
The back has woven lockets of hair, also under glass, with a gold monogram, WH on it.
Condition of painting t-shell, hair and glass is very good. The back has been removed and secured with new nails, which I have not re-opened.
